Cartagena was founded in 1533 and has a long and eventful history sprinkled with many legends. Under Spanish colonial rule it was the main hub to transport gold and silver to Europe. The city was also an important centre of slave trade. It was attacked and looted many a time by Caribbean pirates and other hostile forces, including those of Sir Francis Drake and Edward Vernon. Ultimately, Cartagena had to fortify its defences by building an imposing walled fort which is now a major attraction.
Cartagena is essentially made up of two parts - the historic old walled city (cuidad amurallada) and the glitzy new part of town, the Bocagrande.
Well preserved, the old walled city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A leisurely stroll or Cartagena tour along its network of cobbled streets taking in the sights and attractions on either side is an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of a Cartagena holiday. Colourful colonial-era houses with wooden balconies jutting into the streets are flanked by grand mansions with lush courtyards and by impressive centuries old churches. What makes the place all the more delightful is its continuing vibrancy - sounds of music fill the air in the evenings and its clubs, exclusive Cartagena hotels and elegant restaurants come alive with activity.
Bocagrande, the new part of town, is a long strip of land full of swanky new Cartagena boutique hotels, nightclubs, restaurants and shops facing the beach. The nightlife is absolutely wonderful in this part of town, with live music and dancing going on well into the night at many clubs and discos.
Weather in Cartagena is sunny and warm for much of the year. Humidity can be stifling at times, however the cool sea breeze makes evenings pleasant.
